SIGNS OF A GOOD CHARACTER

FAIRYTALES WITH BITE

In Signs of a Good Character, I list 10 things I would count as being signs of a well written and developed character.  I include things like a good character has depth to them and how they handle crises reveals more of that depth.  Do you agree with my list and can you add to it?

THIS WORLD AND OTHERS

Putting Your Characters on a Diet is, for me, when you give the readers everything they need to know about the characters but no more than that. Cut out all the flab!

FACEBOOK PAGE

The theme of characters continues as I discuss what is it about them that is the real draw to any story or book.

WHEN WISHING ISN’T ENOUGH

FAIRYTALES WITH BITE

In When Wishing Isn’t Enough I look at character motivation. Even “crazy” characters have to have sound reasons for being the way they are (even if those sound reasons are only sound to them!).  Basically, your readers need to see/understand where you are coming from.  They don’t have to agree with your characters (and neither do you!) but as long as what the character is saying/doing makes sense from that character’s viewpoint, then they will seem real enough to your readers to keep with them with you.

THIS WORLD AND OTHERS

In Talking It Through I look at dialogue, one of my favourite aspects of writing.  I suppose it is one of my favourite aspects because, to me, without dialogue, characters don’t really come to life on the page.  I also discuss the value of reading your work out loud and how this is particularly useful for discovering if your dialogue flows well.

FACEBOOK PAGE

I thought I’d list books for the professions tonight.  For example:

Jaws – one for dentists and those who work with orthodontics

Totally silly post but fun I hope.  (It was certainly fun for me to write it!)

SPREADING THE WORD

FAIRYTALES WITH BITE

I talk about Spreading the Word tonight and actually do it in the post!  (From Light to Dark and Back Again is now up on the Association of Christian Writers’ online bookshop and I was spreading the word about that, as well as my book!).  I also talk about characters’ spreading the word (especially from within their viewpoint.  Even villains have good reasons for doing what they do, even if it is only good from their perspective).

THIS WORLD AND OTHERS

Adapting to Change looks at how easy it is (or otherwise) for characters to do this.  I ask about what happens when change is forced upon a character and how do other characters react if they feel Character A hasn’t handled the change well?  Plenty of story ideas in answering that alone!

BOOK NEWS

As well as the online bookship news, I hope to have news of the cyber launch of From Light to Dark and Back Again soon.  Chapeltown Books and I have a date in mind and I hope to post more on this before too long.

FACEBOOK PAGE

I share news about my book being up on the ACW Bookshop page and discuss the forthcoming ACW Writers’ Day in Birmingham (UK) on 11th March.  I hope to meet up with old friends and make new ones.  I also have two short story competitions to enter before the month is up so busy busy busy!

RELIABILITY

Glad to see Weebly now back up and running.  Good to have it back.

FAIRYTALES WITH BITE

Reliability is something that all writers, readers and characters need. Readers need to feel they can rely on the writer to deliver on the story.  Characters need to be reliable (or exposed as unreliable narrators etc).  I also discuss how characters would react if they find they can’t rely on others after all.

THIS WORLD AND OTHERS

Always write about what you know and tonight’s post discusses technical issues! I look at how such things might affect your characters (and their magical performance).  I ask what machines does your world have and who services these?  What happens if the machines take on a life of their own?

FACEBOOK PAGE

Short and sweet post tonight so have copied and pasted it here.

Need to catch up on my magazine reading so will try and do that tomorrow. I also need to get some stories off for competitions again. Hope to book up my local writing festival before too long. You can tell spring is about – you get all the invites to said festivals! And I’m pleased to say my crocuses are emerging, having escaped the winter and being eaten by those visitors my garden partial to such things.

OTHER NEWS

I’m currently preparing a newsletter which I hope to send out regularly.  It will contain extracts from my stories, published or not, which I am not putting on my websites or this round-up blog.  I hope before too long to have a sign-up button so, if this is of any interest to you, keep an eye out and I’ll say when all is ready.  The idea of a newsletter I’ve been thinking about for a while and now makes more sense now I have a book out there!

WONDERFUL WORLDS

Weebly seem to be having technical issues so I can’t link to either of my sites tonight.  I can’t even get on to them to edit them!  Hopefully this will be put right for tomorrow.  Meanwhile I shall blog directly here instead.

I have reported the issue to Weebly and they seem to be having a global issue at the moment on this so in some ways it is a relief to know it isn’t just me.  On the other hand, I feel sorry for their technical people having to get to the bottom of it all!

CHANDLER’S FORD TODAY

I discuss one of my great loves – radio – in tonight’s post called The Wonderful World of Radio.  I list my 1o favourite radio comedies.  I also share some of my favourite adaptions (there was a great ghost story about Henry VIII being haunted by Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour and Katherine Howard just to name one example).  I also talk about how radio was used in my late mother’s room when she was staying in a specialist dementia home to help make things seem more homely.  It worked beautifully!  Comments welcome via the CFT comments box as to what your favourite radio shows are.

FAIRYTALES WITH BITE/THIS WORLD AND OTHERS

Given the technical issues above, I thought I would write a short post here which could have gone on to either of my Weebly sites.

Reading Your Work Out

This came up as an idea to talk about following the flash fiction workshop I ran with Southampton Writers’ Circle this last week.  I set some exercises for this and joined in with them.  The great thing with this is we all went home with stories to work on and I hope mine will eventually end up in my follow up collection to From Light and Dark and Back Again.  I read my draft pieces out in the hope that it would encourage others to do so – and some did.  But I know some held back and I remember doing this myself years ago when I was first set exercises like this.  The thought that hammers through your mind is what you have drafted is total rubbish, it will sound silly etc etc.

What I tried to get across at the time, and will do so again here, is everybody’s first draft is “not great” (shall we say – I have heard ruder versions of this phrase, as I expect you have!).  But in many ways that is the whole point.  You are reacting with your “gut” to the challenge you have been set and you are getting your raw ideas down.  The polishing and tidying up must be a separate task and can come later.  So I would say never be afraid to read your work out because nobody is expecting it to be perfect.  Shakespeare’s first drafts weren’t perfect.  Dickens needed to edit.  Austen rewrote and rewrote.  We are in good company here!

What is useful in reading work out is hearing people’s reactions – the ones that escape as you are reading your story out, their instinctive reactions to your tale.  I found in reading my some of my published humorous pieces out, yes the humour did work where I thought it would.  With my drafts, I picked up on what went down well so I will bear this in mind when I edit these pieces.

Even if you’re not in a class, reading your work out loud to yourself is a good idea.  You will literally hear if you’ve got your dialogue (and the rhythm) right.  So give it a go!

THE DOWNSIDE OF THE HAPPY EVER AFTER

Again sorry for the no-show.  The cold I thought I had I think must have been a touch of flu.  Have not felt this rough in ages.  Still writing can be a great distraction when your head’s not too fuzzy to do any!

FAIRYTALES WITH BITE

The Downside of  the Happy Ever After looks at how Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and the Three Bears might have felt if things stopped being so positive for them.  I also ask if things are not so rosy after all for your characters, what are they doing to rectify it.  And I share a wish of mine that has come true – I ran my first flash fiction workshop.  More below.

THIS WORLD AND OTHERS

New Ventures looks at a new venture for me – my flash fiction workshop with Southampton Writers’ Circle.  It was huge fun and we all took home stories to develop further.  I hope mine will go into the collection to eventually follow up From Light to Dark and Back Again.  Many thanks to Geoff Parkes for giving permission to share the photo below.  I think it is a great image and conjures up the spirit of the evening well.  I also discuss what new ventures your characters might want to try.

CHANDLER’S FORD TODAY

My post later on Friday will be about the joy of radio, one of my great loves.

A cry from the heart tonight.  I sometimes have dreadful issues signing out of a Word Press site.  Would like advice as to how to overcome it.  I spent close to five minutes trying to sign out of the other WP blog I’m involved with and thought well someone may have the answer to this.  If you do, please share!

FAIRYTALE PR FAILURES

Apologies for the no-show yesterday – all due to the dreaded lurgy.  Feeling better than I did but definitely not ready for any decent singing sessions right now!  Yesterday it sounded as if I’d been on helium!

FAIRYTALES WITH BITE

I take a humorous look at Fairytale PR Failures tonight and, amongst others, look at the failures of Cinderella’s fairy godmother and those authorities who thought it not worth mentioning their woods had a talking wolf in them with a penchant for dressing up in human clothes.  It doesn’t matter what world you live on, that behaviour is distinctly odd!

THIS WORLD AND OTHERS

The Point of It All by contrast takes a serious look at self-evaluation. I share questions I think every writer serious about trying to get published should ask themselves.  Why?  Partly so you know what you are trying to achieve, but also so you are ready when others may ask the same or similar questions of you.  If you can think of questions to add, please comment!

FACEBOOK PAGE

Short post on here tonight so thought I would just repeat it here, rather than share the embed link.

The dreaded lurgy got me yesterday, so much so I sounded as if I’d been on helium for most of the day. Strongest thing I WAS on was tea!

To Southampton Writers’ Circle, whom I’m due to see tomorrow night to run a flash fiction workshop, I promise not to breathe all over you (!) but am glad to report voice is a lot better than yesterday so I won’t have to mime what I was intending to say! (Just as well really, I always was hopeless at charades).

To all who have had/are suffering from this wretched bug, get well soon!

QUESTIONS TO ASK WHEN WORLD BUILDING

Tonight’s theme is asking questions – lots of them!

FAIRYTALES WITH BITE

In Questions to Ask When World Building, I share some useful pointers that should be considered when planning out a new world.  (This is one of the lovely things about fantasy and science fiction – we create our own worlds!  Horror and crime are based generally on what we already know but with fantasy and science fiction, the possibilities are endless).  I look at how the world is governed, what rights do people have and how wide a variety of peoples are on the world you’ve created amongst other topics.

THIS WORLD AND OTHERS

Putting Yourself on the Spot shares three questions I think every writer should regularly ask of themselves.  I look at why am I writing this, am I writing this in the right way and can I do what I am doing better?  The answer to the last question is inevitably yes!  The middle question is really about whether you’ve chosen the right format for your story.  For example some of what I write is punchy so flash fiction is generally the best vehicle for that.  Others are more thoughtful piece so a standard length short story (1500 to 2000 words) is usually better.  And the first question reminds you why you were enthuasistic about the idea in the first place, which is no bad thing to be reminded of especially if you’re feeling bogged down.

FACEBOOK PAGE

I discuss my current Kindle read – Westminster Bones, which is a fairly scathing look into whether the bones in the urn in Westminster Abbey are really those of the Princes in the Tower.  Let’s just say I wouldn’t put a bet on at the bookmakers after reading this book!  But it is a very good read, the arguments are well set out and I must admit I would like to see some proper DNA testing done.

BEING QUIZZED

FAIRYTALES WITH BITE

In Being Quizzed I share details of my interview by my fellow scribe, Jacci Gooding.  Usually, I ask the questions for Chandler’s Ford Today but it was a real joy to be on the other side of the fence.  Jacci put some great questions to me and I am delighted to share the link to her blog here.  I also discuss networking (I met Jacci at the Winchester Writers’ Festival a few years back, neither of us could have foreseen an interview happening but I am so glad it did!).  I also ask how your characters react to being quizzed.

THIS WORLD AND OTHERS

I link into my interview again in New Directions (given being interviewed is very much a new direction for me!) but also ask about what new directions your characters are facing.  Are they facing these willingly?  What are the consequences of these new directions for them?  How your characters handle change, especially unlooked for change, could and should reveal a great deal about them.

WEBSITE NEWS

I’m currently working on a From Light to Dark and Back Again page for Fairytales with Bite.  Once I’ve got this up and running I will copy it across to This World and Others.  The idea is to have all interviews, posts, book signing news etc all on this one page.  It will take me a while to get things together but please visit and feedback would be welcome.  I intend to include a FAQs slot, what led me to write the book etc etc.

FACEBOOK PAGE

I talk about Jacci’s interview here and how it was odd for me to be the other side of the fence.  It was a great odd to experience though!

WISH FULFILMENT

FAIRYTALES WITH BITE

Wish Fulfilment discusses how would your characters react to seeing others having their wishes granted but not their own?  Also, how would they react if their own were granted?  What are the criteria a fairy godmother or character of that ilk would use before deciding to grant a wish?  This post came about as my Chandler’s Ford Today post this week talks about a major wish fulfilment of mine – the publication of From Light to Dark and Back Again by Chapeltown Books.  More below.

THIS WORLD AND OTHERS

Small Steps again links to my CFT post but also discusses the value of small steps in any writer’s development.  I’ve learned over time not to undervalue these because, though they seemed insignificant in the overall scheme of things at the time, I know now that I wouldn’t be where I am writing wise without them.  I also discuss the value of persistence, patience and being open to new writing ideas.  When I started, I had one fixed idea in my head – to get my novel The Trouble with Mother published.  I still want to do that at some stage but I decided to try short story writing, which led on to flash fiction, and non-fiction thanks to the CFT posts.  So keep going and celebrate all small steps – they can and do lead to bigger ones!

CHANDLER’S FORD TODAY

I share my latest CFT post – Published – My Debut Flash Fiction Collection – and discuss what that means to me.  I also share my steps to publication – there were many of them!  And the great thing with writing is you never stop learning or wanting to improve on what you do, so I very much hope I’ll have many more small (and bigger) steps in the years to come.

Again links to my CFT post.  Anyone would think I was thrilled to be published!  (Err…  this is my example of understatement for tonight!).
