QUIZZING AND IDEAS FINDING

FAIRYTALES WITH BITE

In Quizzing I share some questions that can be put to your characters to help you find out more about them (especially their hidden depths) before you write for/about them.  I look at whether they have any regrets (a useful thing to know given regrets can change/inhibit behaviour) and what they really want.  There are, of course, lots of questions you could put to a character but I think the three I’ve shared here are amongst the most useful you could ask.

THIS WORLD AND OTHERS

Ideas Finding lives up to its title!  I share a few sources of ideas, including proverbs, headlines, themes from songs etc, all of which I’ve found useful “spark” generators.

I look at the current series of Doctor Who and share some of what I love about the show, especially the “layers” to the writing here.

FACEBOOK PAGE – FROM LIGHT TO DARK AND BACK AGAIN

I share another extract from when I was interviewed by fellow writer, Jacci Gooding.  (Her short story collection, A Collection of Unsettling Stories, really does live up to its name!).  I take a look at the million dollar question – where do I find my ideas?

My second post here tonight looks at the genre in which I write and what drew me to it.

LIVING IN A MAGICAL WORLD – THE ADVANTAGES

FAIRYTALES WITH BITE

Living in a Magical World – The Advantages shares some reasons why being in a magical environment can be a good thing.  You can genuinely get to work for the fairy government and destroy things magically and get paid for doing so.  Why?  To improve spell efficiency!  And if you ever wanted to be able to talk to animals and they to you, the magical world is the place to be.  Just be prepared for them to have better conversation than you might have though!

THIS WORLD AND OTHERS

Facing Something New looks at how easy (or otherwise) your characters and you too as a writer find this.  I know I find it helpful to have a writing routine, for example, but there are times I have to change it due to life events and so on.  This used to flummox me but it doesn’t now.  I accept it as one of those things and I will always resume my writing routine when I can.  But how well do your characters take to having to do something new?

FACEBOOK PAGE – GENERAL

An age old writing question tonight – which is the most important, character or plot?  See if you agree with my thoughts.  Comments welcome.

FACEBOOK PAGE – FROM LIGHT TO DARK AND BACK AGAIN

I was interviewed last year by fellow writer and friend, Jacci Gooding.  One question I thought would be good to share on this page was “how do you think you’ve evolved creatively?”  Fantastic question and great to answer.  See my thoughts on the topic.  (And how do you think you’ve evolved creatively?!).

INTERVIEWING

FAIRYTALES WITH BITE

I discuss interviewing and include news of my Chandler’s Ford Today post as part of this, more on that in a moment.  But from a world building viewpoint, who does carry out interviews in your fictional setting?  What passes for the media in your world?  Who runs it?  Who asks questions on behalf of the layman?  All worth thinking about.

THIS WORLD AND OTHERS

I talk about Meeting and Greeting tonight.  I’m looking forward to doing quite a bit of this tomorrow when I go to the Association of Christian Writers’ Day in Birmingham (UK).  But from a story viewpoint, how do your characters meet and greet each other?  What is the hierarchy?  How welcome (or not) are outsiders?

OTHER NEWS

I am delighted to say that fellow author, Georgina Hannan, invited me to donate a prize to one of her recent giveaways.  I donated a signed copy of From Light to Dark and Back Again and the winner is Doris Orman and I will be posting her prize off to her next week.  I was thrilled to be asked to join with this – and even more thrilled I have a book to be able to offer!

CHANDLER’S FORD TODAY/FACEBOOK PAGE

I talk about the joy of interviews in this week’s Chandler’s Ford Today post.  I share some questions I was asked by fellow author, Jacci Gooding, and discuss what I liked about the questions.  Jacci was great at asking me questions that made me think about what I do as a writer and look back at how far I’ve come so far on my own writing journey.  The best interviewers draw the interviewees out and I think Jacci has great talent here!  Certainly it was interesting being on the other side of the interviewing fence!

BEING QUIZZED

FAIRYTALES WITH BITE

In Being Quizzed I share details of my interview by my fellow scribe, Jacci Gooding.  Usually, I ask the questions for Chandler’s Ford Today but it was a real joy to be on the other side of the fence.  Jacci put some great questions to me and I am delighted to share the link to her blog here.  I also discuss networking (I met Jacci at the Winchester Writers’ Festival a few years back, neither of us could have foreseen an interview happening but I am so glad it did!).  I also ask how your characters react to being quizzed.

THIS WORLD AND OTHERS

I link into my interview again in New Directions (given being interviewed is very much a new direction for me!) but also ask about what new directions your characters are facing.  Are they facing these willingly?  What are the consequences of these new directions for them?  How your characters handle change, especially unlooked for change, could and should reveal a great deal about them.

WEBSITE NEWS

I’m currently working on a From Light to Dark and Back Again page for Fairytales with Bite.  Once I’ve got this up and running I will copy it across to This World and Others.  The idea is to have all interviews, posts, book signing news etc all on this one page.  It will take me a while to get things together but please visit and feedback would be welcome.  I intend to include a FAQs slot, what led me to write the book etc etc.

FACEBOOK PAGE

I talk about Jacci’s interview here and how it was odd for me to be the other side of the fence.  It was a great odd to experience though!
